Part VII : Omaha Beach, Colleville-sur-mer
Omaha Beach measures 8km (5 miles) long and is located on the coast of Normandy. This location played a huge part in World War II and the D-Day landings. You can read more about it here.
Seeing the huge expanse of beach that stretches on forever immediately made me homesick. It made me think of the Gold Coast region in Australia. Although it was a beautiful sunny day it was painfully windy. The weather in the north of France, especially on the coast can be extreme, I can only imagine what it would have been like to fight a war in these sort of conditions. Although the temperature wasn’t that cold the wind made it feel 10° colder (again, it reminded me of Australia 😉 )
There was a bit of a hike from the car park up to the hill to see the monuments. It’s worth it though, and you get a much better view of the beach from up there.
I’d definitely recommend a trip here if you’re a World War II history buff or if you like wind sports! This seemed like the perfect place to do them.
